Chalkboard Pumpkin Light DIY

09/06/2013

Chalkboard pumpkins are fun to paint!
I found a plastic pumpkin light at the thrift shop for 99 cents and decided I was going to paint it with chalkboard paint. But not after arguing with my 4 year old who wanted me to buy every beat up flea bitten stuffed toy in the place. NO we will not be bringing home that crusty Elmo!

I received some chalkboard paint last spring for a spring decor campaign and have been waiting to do some fun Halloween projects with it.
My painting assistant!

This Chalkboard Paint by Plaid is what I used.
We painted the plastic pumpkin with the chalkboard paint. Two coats.
We let the chalkboard paint dry for 24 hours as recommended on the directions.
When we first painted the pumpkin it didn’t really look like a chalkboard surface. It just looked like plain black paint. That was because we hadn’t CURED it yet. Curing a chalkboard? “What the heck is that?”, you ask?
You have to cure it before you use it. Like letting fine wine sit in the barrel to age. No, not really. Something about needing to smear chalk on the surface to make it more adherent.
We smeared the whole pumpkin with chalk to CURE the chalkboard paint. Then we wiped it off with a paper towel. After that it was ready to draw on with chalk!
