Let’s talk about sewing challenges through the years

05/02/2018

Me Made May, Kids Clothes week, Sew Weekly, Skirt Week, Spring Top Week, the Ready To Wear Fast, or my own Sew & Tell Saturday I used to host here on the blog…. I’ve done them all and have been doing so off and on since soon after I started blogging in 2010. And have I ever stuck to one of the challenges completely? No Way. And do I feel guilty about it. I used to, but not anymore. I consider these challenges suggestions. If I stick to them, great. If not, no big deal!

I used to feel kind of pressured halfway through Me Made May because I wasn’t keeping up with the selfies. Then I said to myself, “Get over yourself! No one notices if you post selfies of your Me Mades everyday or not. And no one really cares because, well, they are all concerned about taking their own selfies for Me Made May! So I post when I can or when I want to, and then I don’t worry about it.

I checked back on my blog to look for old Me Made May posts. I was sent down a rabbit hole of looking through old posts. I can’t believe how small the girls were! I couldn’t actually find many posts, because the first few years it was all in a Flickr group. Remember Flickr? It’s what we all used to use before Instagram! Flickr is still around, and I use it once in awhile to share a photo when sewing up an Oliver & S pattern. I think it’s one of the few Flickr accounts that is still active. Do you still use Flickr?

Since I posted all of my selfies on the Flickr group I can only find a few of them. Darn it! One more reason to post content on our own blogs. That way we can’t lose them if a website goes under. Like Photo Bucket.

If you want to fall down the rabbit hole of Me Made May, and waste some more time, check out the links below! You might recognize some faces! And FYI, iI’m pretty sure it was 2010 when Zoe from the So Zo What Do You Know Blog first started it with 65 contributors that month.

It’s pretty cool that she started this thing, and it’s still going, isn’t it? It’s like a sewing phenomenon, and my Instagram feed is flooded with Me Made May posts, whether I like it or not!

……..I sure had a lot of fun and wasted a lot of time going through those old Flickr posts. The dirty dishes had to wait quite awhile tonight. The vintage look was a big thing back then. I know I was all about my Suzie Homemaker look. It was like a trip down memory lane seeing some of the bloggers that I used to love to read. Some are still blogging, and some quit a long time ago.

And what about my Ready To Wear Fast this year? How is that going? Well, I can tell you guys that I have never stuck to any of the Ready to Wear fasts hosted by Sarah from Goodbye Valentino in the past, and always dropped out come summer time, when I would buy a swimsuit and after that, what the hell, why not just throw in the towel and hit the summer sales?

We will see. This year is my best year yet. I haven’t bought anything so far… well….actually, I did buy a pair of jeans and workout pants at The Gap a few months ago. I had spent the night at my best childhood friend’s house, and over the years we have always shopped together and funnily enough, we always end up buying the same thing because we would both love it. We just agree not to wear our things at the same time! Or at least, we used to back when we used to go out together to hit the town. Nowadays, it doesn’t really matter! I don’t care if we are both wearing the same jeans anymore. For me, one of the good things about getting older means I’m less concerned about silly things like that! But I don’t really wear those jeans I bought anyway, because the fabric feels too stretchy and synthetic, I think there is too much Lycra in them, and they stretch out too much, And the workout pants slip down when I’m wearing them.

Just more reason to make my own clothes! So since I haven’t worn those pieces I bought, I’ll just pretend I didn’t buy them. OK?

You can go crazy trying to keep up with all the challenges, much less join them. I think it can suck some of the joy and peace out of sewing if you are making something just to participate. The point is to make things you’ll actually wear, not sew up so you can look like one of the “in crowd.”

I didn’t join the RTW Fast because I know I will buy a new swim suit. No plans to make one of those when Lands End has such great ones!

Glad you’re still blogging, Justine 🙂

I don’t do any of the challenges. I participated in one jeans making contest on PR; fun but I’m not interested in doing that again. I don’t do MMM because it sounds like too much effort. LOL I don’t like to mix my hobby with stress or pressure. I use to load my photos up to Flickr but they changed it and now you have to have a yahoo sign in, which I don’t. Oh well. Not interested in even accessing those pics anymore. I bought a new blouse out the other day and was so excited because it fit beautifully and was drastically reduce on clearance. A top for $130 down to $22. That’s my kind of RTW.

Thank you for the informative post! It’s so interesting:) I love the mini dress, the hem and neckline are so lovely.
