That tank top pattern , Simplicity 1589, I bought at Wal Mart is turning into my favorite summer sew!
I made two more of these woven tanks with cutout backs already! This version I sewed from some upcycled silk galaxy fabric from Isabelle’s now unworn high low dress I made her a couple of years ago. I lowered the neckline a little and used a very thin vintage black bias tape for bindings.
I know these photos are kind of out of focus. sorry.
This geometric printed version I sewed from a rayon print I bought at Joann fabrics with a coupon. I’ve only recently tried sewing with rayon wovens, and I love the drape so much. It has a totally different feel from my silks. It’s a bit heavier with more flowiness. I can’t wait to go downtown soon to try and find some other unique rayon prints.
I was actually pretty impressed with the selection at Jo-ann though! However, I should hold back on the fabric buying. I’ve been to some great estate sales lately, and my hoard is starting to grow again!
I sewed these a size bigger than my first version, which I made in a size 10. I read other reviews saying the ease on this top was huge, but I didn’t find that to be the case at all for my own body. A pattern change I did make though , was shaving off one inch from the bottom side seams and then redrawing it to the armhole to reduce the billowiness there. That resulted in a total of 4 inches less volume. I’m considering adding an elasticated skirt to this pattern to make an easy summer dress. I do like the shirt tail hem on this top and it feels very ready to wear. It’s such a quick sew. About an hour.
Happy sewing!
I actually have this pattern in my stash. After seeing your versions am pulling it out to make some cute little summer tops.
