Rifle paper Co. Wonderland fabric top. Simplicity

03/23/2018

After the past couple weeks of sewing and pattern making frantically for Project Run and Play, I needed to make myself something easy. It’s been a long time since I made my own designs, and when the public and judges aren’t that crazy about them, as happened this past week, it’s hard not to be disappointed, since it’s more personal than just sewing from a pattern. But I made it through this week, to the next challenge, so that’s something!

After making Gigi’s entry, I had almost a yard and a half left of this beautiful Rifle Paper for Cotton & Steel rayon sent to me from The Confident Stitch. It was just enough to knock out a quick little ruffled sleeve top. Simplicity 8602.

I made a size 12 with a D cup, (yay for cup sizes!) and added 1.5 inches to the shorter version. I might make the longer version next time. It feels a bit short, but that is the trend now. Maybe I just need a higher waisted jean. A higher waisted jean would also suck in that tummy. I’ve been working out, but it’s a lot easier to get out of shape than to get back into shape. Little by little.

I’m pretty sure I did not need to make the back placket, as the top slips over my head without opening it. Without the placket, this would be a really quick sew. As it was, it took me only one afternoon to put it together. I think it’s a great pattern, and much better on me than the last ruffle sleeved top I made,  McCall’s 7542. That pattern had a circular flounce instead of a ruffle, and did not work for me. Hence the name of my post, “My Ugliest Top Yet”. Also, a flounce takes up a  lot more fabric than a straight gathered ruffle piece.

So back to the sewing room I must go, as I have two days to make an outfit for this week. Wish me luck!
